The history of Morton’s Power Equipment goes back to 1943, when the company was first established as Morton’s Garage by founder William W. Morton. The original Morton’s Garage was located at Spotsylvania Courthouse, behind Scott Perry’s Store (now known as Chewning’s Grocery). The company started out as a repair business focused on school buses, sawmill diesel units, and forestry equipment.

Then, in the early 1960s, Morton’s Garage started to sell and repair chainsaws. William W. Morton even got involved in helping STIHL, a leading chainsaw producer from Germany, develop new features to improve safety and efficiency. Many other kinds of outdoor power equipment were soon added to the Morton’s product line.

In the late 1970s, William W. Morton decided to retire. He sold the business to his nephews, Bob and Jeff Massey, who still run the company to this day. Morton’s Power Equipment is now located in a massive, 40,000-square-foot facility in Fredericksburg, VA.
